With the introduction of the early childhood education as part the Basic Education duringthe 2007 education reforms in Ghana, the West End University College is introducing adegree course tailored to prepare qualified teachers for the early childhood education centres.  This measure is to fill the teaching gap in the early childhood centres which to a very large extent, are occupied by untrained teachers.

In recent times, there has been an increasing desire from teachers and un-trained teachers to upgrade themselves to diploma and degree levels.  In response to this, seven Colleges of Education have been tasked to train teachers for early childhood at diploma levels.  Again, the University of Education,  Winneba and the University of Cape Coast also run a programme in Early Childhood Education for teachers at the Diploma and degree levels.    There is the challenge of upgrading programmes to meet these ever increasing desires of teachers for higher education.  It is against this background that the West End University College has decided to introduce the B.Ed in early childhood education to satisfy the professional and academic preparation of teachers for the early childhood education.  The B.Ed in Early Childhood Education will ensure that more competent and qualified teachers are trained through the sandwich mode.

The goal of the B.Ed (Early Childhood) programme is to produce broad-based and competent professional teachers who would be able to function in several sectors of today’s Basic Education System, especially at the early childhood level.

The objectives of the programme are to produce competent graduates who will be able to:

Serve as teacher trainers for both pre-service and in-service teacher education programmes at the basic level.

Act as managers, heads, supervisors and instructional leaders of basic schools, unit, circuit, district and regional levels.

Improvise teaching/ learning materials and use them effectively in teaching and learning.
