B.Ed. Basic Education
Basic Education is the foundation upon which higher education is built. In recent years, however, there have been complaints about the quality of teachers in terms of their teaching. To correct this deficiency in the teaching quality, the West End University College has undertaken to train highly qualified teachers in both content and pedagogy to teach in the Basic level of the educational ladder.
The goal of the B.Ed (Basic Education) programme is to produce broad-based and competent teachers who would be able to function in several sectors of today’s Basic Education system.
The objective is to offer a four-year Bachelor of Education (Basic Education) degree programme that will prepare high caliber graduate professionals who will serve the Ministry of Education and Ghana Education Service in the following capacity:
Administrators and supervisors in basic education;
Head teachers of basic schools;
Organizers of in-service training for basic school teachers;
Developers of curriculum materials in basic schools, and
Initiators of programmes to improve the quality of basic education.
West End University College is innovative and entrepreneurial in spirit and its fundamental rationale is to produce highly qualified graduates who show evidence of academic excellence, professional competence and moral integrity in business circles. The challenge will be met through:

We aim to deepen students understanding of how businesses operate and to develop their abilities to recognize and analyse the economic, technical, financial, social and organizational parameters within which modern managers make decisions. Students will get a thorough grounding in the theories and principles of accounting, , finance, marketing, legal environment of business, ethics, business research methods, human resource management, economics, strategic and operations management as well as computer and information skills.
Philosophy of Programme
The philosophy of the BEd. (Accounting) programme to provide essential knowledge and skills to Accounting educators and administrators for national development. It offers student-teachers the opportunity to have in-depth practical knowledge and experience about teaching accounting at the senior high school. The BEd. (Accounting) programme ensures that good quality accounting teachers who can employ the pedagogical content knowledge in delivering various accounting topics are trained to meet the ever growing demand for accounting teachers for national development.
The overall goal of the programme is to produce qualified and effective accounting teachers who have adequate subject matter knowledge and can employ critical and reflective thinking in their analysis of educational issues in general, and accounting curricular and pedagogical issues relating to accounting education in particular.
The objectives of the programme are to:
- Produce accounting teachers and facilitators who will effectively implement the senior high school accounting course;
- promote basic and applied research in accounting education
- prepare students for higher academic and professional pursuits accounting
BEd. Early Childhood
With the introduction of the early childhood education as part the Basic Education duringthe 2007 education reforms in Ghana, the West End University College is introducing adegree course tailored to prepare qualified teachers for the early childhood education centres. This measure is to fill the teaching gap in the early childhood centres which to a very large extent, are occupied by untrained teachers.
In recent times, there has been an increasing desire from teachers and un-trained teachers to upgrade themselves to diploma and degree levels. In response to this, seven Colleges of Education have been tasked to train teachers for early childhood at diploma levels. Again, the University of Education, Winneba and the University of Cape Coast also run a programme in Early Childhood Education for teachers at the Diploma and degree levels. There is the challenge of upgrading programmes to meet these ever increasing desires of teachers for higher education. It is against this background that the West End University College has decided to introduce the B.Ed in early childhood education to satisfy the professional and academic preparation of teachers for the early childhood education. The B.Ed in Early Childhood Education will ensure that more competent and qualified teachers are trained through the sandwich mode.
The goal of the B.Ed (Early Childhood) programme is to produce broad-based and competent professional teachers who would be able to function in several sectors of today’s Basic Education System, especially at the early childhood level.
The objectives of the programme are to produce competent graduates who will be able to:
Serve as teacher trainers for both pre-service and in-service teacher education programmes at the basic level.
Act as managers, heads, supervisors and instructional leaders of basic schools, unit, circuit, district and regional levels.
Improvise teaching/ learning materials and use them effectively in teaching and learning
The philosophy of the programme is to provide the essential knowledge and skills involved in corporate secretarial function in small, medium and large scale organizations. The programme extends to both the strategic and functional contexts, in leading teams in secretarial best practice, in ensuring compliance with law and regulation, and in establishing efficient internal communication of management decisions.
The Bachelor of Education (Management) programme is designed to provide contemporary management knowledge and skills to students who aim to work in a management role as well as those who wish to complete a pre-service teacher education programme with management as a major teaching subject. In particular, the programme equips students with the necessary knowledge, skills and self-confidence to perform management functions within constantly changing and highly competitive national and international business environments, to teach Business Management effectively in Senior High Schools and to take up managerial positions at all levels of the education system.
The overall goal of the programme is to produce qualified and effective management teachers who have adequate subject matter knowledge and can employ critical and reflective thinking in their analysis of educational issues in general, and accounting curricular and pedagogical issues relating to management education in particular.
